ROCHESTER, N.Y.– Governments are saving money by taking a new approach to an everyday task – printing. Working with Xerox (NYSE: XRX), cities like Jacksonville, Fla., Colorado Springs and Aurora, Colo. are using managed print services (MPS) to save hundreds of thousands of dollars annually by better using technology resources, and providing citizens with faster, more efficient service.
For example, the city of Colorado Springs expects to save up to 20 percent on print output costs using Xerox’s Enterprise Print Services (EPS) to centralize management of output devices, like printers, copiers and fax machines. By eliminating unused or outdated devices and reducing the total number from 1,200 to 400, the city is simplifying the way employees print, share and store documents, allowing them to interact more effectively with citizens.
“Working with Xerox, we found a partner who will continue to look for ways to improve our technology infrastructure and do things better, faster and cheaper while our staff stays focused on providing a really great service to the Colorado Springs community,” said Jesse James, interim CIO, Colorado Springs.
Municipalities across the U.S. are working with Xerox to find ways to save money. For example, the:
- City of Aurora plans to save up to 35 percent of print costs and meet its sustainability goals by decreasing the number of printers and educating employees on responsible printing. The city has already seen a drop in paper and power consumption.
- City of Jacksonville cut print infrastructure costs and improved service to approximately 850,000 residents by reducing the time city employees spend on print-related activities. The MPS strategy also contributes to Jacksonville’s sustainability goals by reducing energy use up to 50 percent.
- City of Rochester, N.Y. is saving more than $2 million in printing costs, by reducing the number of printers, copiers and fax machines from 459 to 168, and installing 24 multifunction printers to replace single-function machines. Using Xerox Print Services the city will also reduce the cost of everyday color printing and meet its sustainability goals.

An MPS strategy also delivers a positive impact to a city’s environmental efforts using Xerox’s print governance features – guidelines that help employees redirect print jobs to the most cost-effective and energy-efficient machine. For example, the city of Dallas is using MPS to support its “Green Dallas” strategy – making better use of resources and simplifying the print environment to conserve energy.
